Story

Hz. Salman رضي الله عنه came to Hz. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to seek his counsel and his help.

His master, a Jew of the Bani Quraizah, kept him so hard at work on his property south of Madinah that he had never been able to have close contact with the Muslim community.

It had been out of the question for him to be at Badr or Uhud or take part in any of the lesser forays which the Prophet ﷺ had led or sent out during the last four years

He had asked his master what it would cost to set him free, but the price was far beyond his means.

He would have to pay forty ounces of gold and plant three hundred date palms.

The Prophet ﷺ told him to write his master an agreement to pay the gold and plant the trees.

Then he called on his Companions to help Salman with the palms, which they did, one contributing thirty palm-shoots, another twenty, and so on, until the full number had been reached.

Then the Prophet ﷺ said: “Go, O Salman, and dig the holes where they are to be planted. When you have finished, come to me and I will plant them with my own hand.”

So Hz. Salman رضي الله عنه dug the holes for them, and the companions helped him, then when he had finished, he came to him ﷺ and told him.

The Prophet ﷺ came out with him and the sahabas started to bring the trees close and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ planted them with his own hand.

It is said that not one single tree among them died.

So later Hz. Salman رضي الله عنه had paid off the trees but there still remained the money.

A piece of gold the size of an egg was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from one of his campaigns.

He ﷺ said: “Take this and pay off what you owe, O Salman.”

Hz. Salman رضي الله عنه said: How could this pay off everything I owe, O Messenger of Allah?

He ﷺ said: “Take it, and Allah will help you to pay off what you owe.”

So Hz. Salman رضي الله عنه took it and weighed it and miraculously it was forty uqiyahs.

So Hz. Salman رضي الله عنه paid them their dues and he was set free.

He was present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at al-Khandaq, and after that he did not miss any major event with him.
