Originally Buratha is the name of the builder and the meaning of the monastery pratha Syriac (the son of wonders) and in Arabic means (soft red earth)
Events related to Imam Ali رضي الله عنه
A tradition tells that once Buratha was a Christian shrine where a Christain leader named Hebar used to sit.
He converted to Islam and went to Kufa with Imam Ali رضي الله عنه.
The Christian shrine was turned into mosque when Imam Ali رضي الله عنه passed by this place in year 37 AH after Nehrwan event, stayed here four days along with his two sons Al-Imam Al-Hasan رضي الله عنه and Al-Imam Al-Hussein رضي الله عنه and nearly 1,000 companions.
Imam Ali رضي الله عنه struck his hand on a black rock and water sweetest than honey began gushing out of it which gushes out even to-date.
Today it is known as Be’r (well) Imam Ali Imam Ali رضي الله عنه. It is said that sick people get health by drinking this water.
Those children who speak very late, they by taking this water begin speaking.
Events related to Hz. Isa عليه اسلام
The tradition says that after the water began gushing out of the rock with the miracle of Imam Ali رضي الله عنه, and his companions did ablution and drank the water, the Imam hinted at a near place and said to his companions: dig it, there are seven hands.
When they dug that place they discovered a white stone. The Imam رضي الله عنه then said: Here (on the white rock) Bibi Maryam رضي الله عنها gave birth to Hz. Isa عليه اسلام.
Although it is highly speculative as that account shows that the event took place in bethlehem which is around 1000 km’s.
The white rock is in display in the mosque for people to see.

Traditions also say that this site has historical significance. It is said that many prophets and righteous people have visited it including Hz. Ibrahim Al-Khalil عليه اسلام and the Hz. Daniyal عليه اسلام.
Mosque
It’s a major shia mosque located on the Karkh side of Baghdad in the Al-Atifiyah area, at the beginning of the road between Baghdad and the city of Kadhimiya.
The Buratha mosque is a large mosque having two minarets built in 1375 AH, an old library, a sanctuary, and a prayer room with a wide nave, a well of water known as the Imam Ali عليه اسلام well and an ancient cemetery.
