Philip the Apostle was one of the Twelve disciples of Hz. Isa عليه اسلام according to New Testament.
Later Christian traditions describe Saint Philip رضي الله عنه as the disciple who preached in Greece, Syria, and Phrygia.
Location of the Tomb
In 2011, Italian archaeologist Francesco D’Andria claimed to have discovered the original tomb of St. Philip during excavations in ancient Hierapolis, close to the modern Turkish city of Denizli.
Ancient tradition associates Hierapolis with Saint Philip رضي الله عنه the disciple, who is believed to have died in the city around 80 CE.
The follower, who is known as the disciple who preached in Greece, Syria, and Phrygia, is said to have been martyred in Hierapolis.
The legend is that Saint Philip رضي الله عنه was crucified upside down or martyred by beheading.
After the apostle’s death, an octagonal tomb named “The Martryium” was erected for him where he is believed to have been martyred.
In Islam
The Qur’anic account of the disciples of Hz. Isa عليه اسلام does not include their names, numbers, or any detailed accounts of their lives.
Muslim Scholars, however, more or less agrees with the New Testament list and says that the disciples included Hz. Sam’un رضي الله عنه (Saint Peter), Saint Philip رضي الله عنه, Saint Thomas رضي الله عنه, Saint Bartholomew رضي الله عنه, Saint Matthew رضي الله عنه, Saint Andrew رضي الله عنه, Saint James رضي الله عنه, Saint Jude رضي الله عنه, Saint John رضي الله عنه and Saint Simon the Zealot رضي الله عنه
