Demolished House of Bibi Khadija رضي الله عنها

It is such a shame that one of the historic places in Mecca sharif where so many things related to our Prophet ﷺ is now demolished and not even a sign is placed on the spot where it would have said something like “this is the spot where the greatest human being on the planet ever lived, ate, slept, prayed,…”

Mecca sharif, Saudi Arabia

Coordinates: 21.424837, 39.827699

The house of Bibi Khadija رضي الله عنها used to be in the Banu Hashim district near to the house where the Prophet ﷺ was born.

It was here that the Prophet ﷺ lived much of his adult life after marriage and up to the Hijrah.

It was here where the Prophet ﷺ received some of the first revelations.

It was here that most of his children were born.

It was here that he spent some of his most difficult years (arounnd 28 years) whilst living in Mecca Sharif under the persecution of the Quraysh.

It was here that Islam entered the heart of Bibi Khadija رضي الله عنها (the first muslim)

It was here that the greatest journey of the greatest man, The Night Journey (al-Isra’ wal-Mi’raj) took place.

And it was here from where he ﷺ started his momentous Hijrah, leaving Hz. Ali رضي الله عنه in his blessed bed.

And he spent 28 years of his life in there. Thus Imam Tabari and others were not exaggerating to state that this house is the best place in Makkah after the Grand Mosque.

In the same house, , the Prophet’s cousin Ali and the Prophet’s servant Zayd ibn Haritha.

Description of the house

The house is reported to have had 5 key areas. The 1st area was the guest area / or the reception room as we would now know it.

The 2nd area was the children’s quarters and where Bibi Fatima رضي الله عنه was born.

The 3rd area was the prayer room where the Prophet ﷺ prayed and the 4th area is the blessed room of Bibi Khadija رضي الله عنها.

The 5th area constituted the hallways and the circulation space.

Demolished by Wahhabi Government

The house that was there was demolished to make way for the expansion of the existing Mosque.

In 1989 there was an excavation of the area to reveal the extent of the house.

Where is the site located

It is not clearly known any longer as to exactly where the house sat, but it was near about where the current ablution areas are behind the Marwah gates.
